Rainstorm Levels 20 Homes in Plateau Community

A rainstorm tore through Nghassi community in Bokkos, Plateau State, on Tuesday evening. It destroyed more than 20 houses and wrecked farmland. No one died, but families lost their homes and now need help.
What Happened
The storm hit around 5 p.m. Resident Bulus Ayuba Ritji alleged that strong winds tore off rooftops, uprooted trees, and brought down buildings within minutes. Many residents lost food, clothing, and other valuables. They are now sheltering with neighbours and relatives.
Bokkos Youth Leader Christopher Luka appealed to the Plateau State Government, NEMA, and PLASEMA. He asked for emergency relief materials and temporary shelter. Officials have not responded yet.

The Bigger Picture
This is not an isolated event. Plateau’s hilly terrain leaves it exposed to storm damage, and erratic rainfall is making things worse. Much of the region’s housing stock simply can’t withstand these storms. Climate resilience can’t stop at Lagos and the coast.
Conclusion
Nghassi’s families need shelter now, not sympathy later. This storm adds another data point to Nigeria’s growing climate exposure , one that rural housing policy still hasn’t caught up with.
